In a statement released by 2K, “Kobe Bryant holds a special place in the heart of every basketball fan,” the statement said. “Someone who truly left everything on the court, where his achievements range from legendary to seemingly impossible.”
“The Mamba Forever Edition celebrates Kobe’s lifelong pursuit of victory and legacy and immortalizes him with two unique custom covers honoring the span of his career,” officials added.
The latest version of the game has been named the “Mamba Forever Edition.” The Mamba Forever Edition will feature Bryant on two special covers. They were hand-painted by an artist using two of Bryant’s most famous photos for inspiration. For the current-generation consoles, Bryant will be featured in his No. 8 jersey — from his days as a bold and brash rookie, while the next-generation consoles will feature the late NBA legend in his No. 24 jersey, the number he played his final game in his iconic 60-point performance.
Bryant was previously the cover athlete for NBA 2K10 and was featured on the Legend Edition of NBA 2K17.
Bryant retired in 2016 after 20 years with the Lakers, finishing his career with five NBA championships, two Finals MVP awards, 18 All-Star Game appearances, and 33,643 points, fourth in NBA history.
Beyond the special covers, several Kobe-centric perks have been included in the “Mamba Forever Edition” including 100,000 VC (NBA 2K’s in-game currency), 10 MyTeam tokens, 40 MyTeam packs (10 at launch, with 10 additional packs each week for the next three weeks) and sapphire versions of Damian Lillard and Zion Williamson to be used in the game’s MyTeam mode as well as various boosts to be used in the game’s MyPlayer mode.
The Mamba version will also include Kobe-focused perks such as a Sapphire Kobe MyTeam card (that can evolve to Ruby), a Mamba MyPlayer uniform, and Black Mamba custom MyTeam jerseys.
The Mamba Forever Edition version, dedicated to Kobe Bryant includes improvements in graphics and gameplay, competitive functions, and for the online community as well as various game modes, offering a “unique immersion in all facets of NBA basketball and all its culture.”
Bryant is one of three cover athletes for 2K21, joining Damian Lillard (current-gen) and Zion Williamson (next-gen), who appear on their respective standard editions.
NBA 2K21 will launch worldwide on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Windows PC, and Google Stadia on Sept. 4.
