With a plethora of games being unveiled at Sony’s PlayStation 5 showcase today, 2K Sports’ and Visual Concepts’ has unveiled the first trailer for NBA 2K21. The minute-long trailer was first released during Sony’s The Future Of Gaming event, and is being billed as “actual PlayStation 5 pre-alpha NBA 2K21 footage”.
In the trailer, Zion Williamson and Greg Thomas, co-founder of NBA 2K developer Visual Concepts, provide some more details in an introduction before the “in-engine” footage. The video’s YouTube description also noted that NBA 2K21 has been “built from the ground up to fully utilize the incredible power, speed, and technology of PS5”. After playing a countdown of just two seconds, Thomas explained, “That’s the total time it will take to load NBA 2K21 on the PS5.”
Zion Williamson, 19, can be seen (digitally) drenched in sweat as 2K Sports, the makers of the lifetime basketball video game, display the graphics of the next installment of the series. The Pelicans’ first overall selection in the 2019 NBA Draft dribbles in a dark and empty gymnasium before launching a powerful, virtual dunk and breaking the rim.
Through a series of close-up shots, it seems apparent that the graphical power in use is being highlighted, with exceedingly detailed sweat beads running across the player’s face.
It’s unclear whether Zion Williamson will be the cover athlete for the video game or not, but there is speculation 2K could honor the late Kobe Bryant as the cover of NBA 2K21.
Co-founder and President of Visual Concepts Greg Thomas appeared in a separate video released by NBA 2K to note how the development team had been working hard from home to ensure that the title becomes “the best basketball game ever”.
2K Games said that “NBA 2K21 will feature drastically improved load speeds, visual fidelity on an unmatched level and an unrivaled breadth of content for basketball fans and players”.
“Fans can expect new game features, game modes, brand partnerships, social events, in-game experiences, and a brand new soundtrack that will set the record as the most definitive collection of music ever assembled in a video game,” it added.
