Suns will Simulate Remaining Games on NBA 2K20

The NBA suspended the 2019-2020 season Wednesday due to the coronavirus outbreak. The Phoenix Suns have found a fun and innovative way to keep the 2019-20 NBA season “alive”, they’ll take their game to the digital basketball court. That’s one creative way to get around the canceled season.

Suns

The Western Conference team has announced plans to play out the remainder of its season using NBA 2K20. The Phoenix Suns will play against the Dallas Mavericks in NBA 2K20 on Friday at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on the team’s Twitch channel, according to a press release Friday. Playing for the Suns will be professional NBA 2K player Antonio Saldivar, and for the Mavericks it’ll be the Mavs’ gaming brand ambassador, Lawrence “Buddy” Norman.

What’s more, In a post on Twitter, the Suns revealed that it will be using the popular basketball game to complete the team’s schedule, with each game streaming life on Twitch.  So fans can watch as they “take on the Dallas Mavericks.” The tweet doesn’t make it clear who will be hosting the stream and if they will be playing someone from the actual Mavericks or an AI opponent. It’s most likely that the team will simply use NBA 2K20 to simulate the games without any human players. The Suns do have at least one avid streamer in Devin Booker, who actually found out about the season’s cancellation while streaming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, if they wanted to get more hands-on.

The Phoenix Suns have one of the worst records in the NBA’s Western Conference this year, placed in 13th out of 15 teams with 26 wins and 39 losses. But maybe they can win more games on NBA 2K20. With players like Booker and Deandre Ayton, it might not be too hard, depending on who’s controlling the opponents or the AI difficulty.

The Suns had a strange regular season in 2019-20. They saw Deandre Ayton miss 25 games due to suspension, scoring machine shooting guard Devin Booker turn into a first-time All-Star as an injury replacement, and Kelly Oubre Jr. rise into an excellent contributor before going down and undergoing shoulder surgery.

Nevertheless, Suns fans can still “watch” their team compete — just in a virtual setting on Twitch — as the team plays out the upcoming schedule as the 30-day suspension, if not longer, extends to the last weeks of what was the original schedule of the NBA.

The results of these games might be meaningless in the grand scheme of things, but the Suns’ live streams ensure that there will still be some NBA action to watch even as the league suspends all play. Following the recent announcement that the NBA season would be suspended due to concerns about the growing coronavirus threat, many fans were left disappointed that they would not be able to see how their favorite team’s season would end. As a result, many fans turned to the next best thing: using a video game to simulate how the rest of the season would turn out. Sure, it may not be the most accurate way to predict a game, but it’s a lot more engaging than studying a bunch of charts and calculating stats.

In addition, other aspects of NBA 2k20 are also affected by Covid-19. The NBA’s shutdown is causing issues with 2K20’s MyLeague mode in an unexpected development. The easiest way to simulate the current NBA season would be to use 2K20’s “Start Today” feature. However, the current suspension of the season has caused a bug in this mode, though this is hardly a first for NBA 2K20. The way the feature works is it starts players where the current season is and continues with the rest of the scheduled games. But since there aren’t any more games scheduled this season, this has caused the mode to crash the game back to the console’s dashboard.

Though the results won’t matter when the season does eventually pick back up, if the Suns continue playing their games on 2K20 and streaming them online, at least basketball fans won’t be bored during these trying times.
